8/31/2023 0 Comments Bumble bee stinger![]() ![]() This is a venom that immediately triggers pain receptors, causing a sharp, burning pain. When a bee stings its victim, it releases melittin. All of a sudden, one stinging bee can become hundreds, or even thousands, just because you were considered a threat to the hive. If a honey bee stings you, she releases strong pheromones that rile up nearby bees. In such a case, she will certainly sting you. The only time that a bee would attack you unprovoked is if you’ve stumbled too close to her hive and she considers you a threat. You’re more likely to get stung in this instance. That’s a risky action as you just might scare the bee, or worse, hurt her. You should also avoid swatting a bee when it buzzes at you curiously. With this in mind, be careful when you’re in an area that you know bees will be in - among flowers or near a known hive. Be careful, though, as they can still sting if they’re dead. A solitary worker bee will only sting you if you scare or hurt her. Bees aren’t interested in people unless they’re defending themselves.Ī bee might buzz around someone curiously, but once it’s clear you’re not a flower, they’ll go away. They want to go back to the hive with their collection without incident. These bees are simply looking for nectar and pollen. Solitary worker bees in gardens, parks and other flowering environments don’t have any desire to sting without reason. Why Bees Stingīees aren’t malevolent insects, despite popular belief. The sooner they can be taken out, the better - as long as it’s in the skin, it’ll continue to pump poison. This means that it has twists and ridges, and once it penetrates the skin, these ridges make it difficult to come out.Īfter getting stung, a victim will find stingers buried in their skin, along with a part of the bee’s abdomen. ![]() They won’t use stinging as a defense mechanism unless attacked by an external force. Queens can go their whole lives only using their stinger once after they hatch. She does this when she hatches, to ensure her position as queen by killing all the other queen larvae before they hatch. It allows the queen to sting multiple times and fly away.Ī queen bee rarely concerns herself with stinging attackers, however, and only uses her stinger within the hive. The reaction is painful but short-lived.In queens, the needlepoint of the stinger is smooth and more like an actual needle. ![]() These proteins impact the clotting factors in the blood, causing blood cells to burst and capillaries to leak, causing pain and cell damage. The venom causes inflammation and sometimes allergic reactions in humans and animals.Ĭertain proteins, known as tryptic amidase, are found in bumblebee venom. Most bumblebees won’t sting without provocation.īumblebees have venom sacs that release venom upon stinging. However, since they are unable to sting, they are harmless.īumblebees sting as a last-resort defence mechanism to fend off imminent threats to themselves or their hive. Some male bees may roam around outside of the hive and fly into people. When one bee stings, it releases pheromones that warn other bees about a threat. Disturbing their nest can provoke them to sting. Though bumblebees are rarely aggressive, they are defensive of their nests and food sources. They will sting if mishandled or threatened, however. Typically, bumblebees are docile and may even befriend humans. Beekeepers can go their whole careers without a bumblebee stinging them. Sometimes swelling can last for a week in more severe reactions.īumblebees are not aggressive creatures. The symptoms from a bumblebee sting can last a few hours to a few days. People allergic to honey bee venom are more likely to have an allergic reaction to bumblebee venom, however. Severe allergies can progress to anaphylaxis, which can be fatal. In most cases, bumblebees will only sting one time in warning, unlike wasps that act more aggressively. Though bumblebees can sting more than once, they’re not as likely to do so as wasps. When a bumble stings you, the stinger can lodge into your skin and pump venom continually. Venom is part of the reason why stings can be painful. A single sting may hurt less than a honey bee or wasp sting, but an aggravated bumble bee will sting more than once. Welts are common with bee stings as well.īumblebee stings can hurt and are not easy to ignore. ![]() The sting wound can cause a local reaction with swelling, redness, and itching, however. Bumblebee stingers are smooth and do not have barbs, so they’re unlikely to leave a stinger in the skin. ![]() 8/31/2023 0 Comments Pietro bembo de aetna![]() Classicists and early modernists alike will benefit from Williams's brilliant rendering of De Aetna, his meticulous tracing of the "Etna Idea," and his impressive leveraging of several scholarly literatures to excavate the poetic, scientific, and historical layers of meaning in Bembo's brief but riveting dialogue." - Seventeenth-Century News " Pietro Bembo on Etna is an ambitious book that accomplishes a great deal. IV: Etna as an Island, Noniano as a Memory Place Three mutually informing features that are critical to the artistic originality of De Aetna receive detailed treatment in this study: (i) the stimulus that Pietro drew from the complex history of Mount Etna as treated in the Greco-Roman literary tradition from Pindar onwards (ii) the striking novelty of De Aetna's status as the first Latin text produced at the nascent Aldine press in the prototype of what modern typography knows as Bembo typeface and (iii) Pietro's ingenious deployment of Etna as a powerful, multivalent symbol that simultaneously reflects the diverse characterizations of, and the generational differences between, father and son in the course of their dialogical exchanges within De Aetna. Far more important in the present study is his eye for creative elaboration, or for transforming his literal experience on the mountain into a meditation on his coming-of-age at a remove from the conventional career-path expected of one of his station within the Venetian patriciate. But De Aetna offers much more than a one-dimensional account of the facts, sights and findings of Pietro's climb. This work is cast in the form of a dialogue that takes place between the young Bembo and his father Bernardo (himself a prominent Venetian statesman with strong humanist involvements) after Pietro's return to Venice from Sicily in 1494. The more particular focus of this study is on the imaginative capacities that crucially shape Bembo's elegantly crafted account, in Latin, of his Etna adventure in his so-called De Aetna, published at the Aldine press in Venice in 1496. ![]() This book is centered on the Venetian humanist Pietro Bembo (1470-1547), on his two-year stay in Sicily in 1492-4 to study the ancient Greek language under one of its most distinguished contemporary teachers, the Byzantine émigré Constantine Lascaris, and above all on his ascent of Mount Etna in 1493. Basically this isn’t a series that I’m going to jump online and buy the rest of the books now so I can just binge-read my way through them, but if I’m doing a casual browse shopping spree and happen to think about it, or if there’s a good sale going on, then I’ll likely pick up the next one. I think this book does set up some interesting concepts and plots for future books in the series, so at some point I will be continuing. It reads very quickly, especially considering the fact that it is almost 500 pages long. Despite my problems with Sophie’s skill and power level, I had a really enjoyable time reading this book. ![]() There is also an interesting cast of characters. However, I will say that I am pretty much always a sucker for a good magic school setup, and this book has that. Like I get that the main character generally has to be someone a bit special–and sometimes that means being the only non-magic user in a world of magic users–but to make this twelve year old elf girl who was raised in the human realm thinking she was human be this super-smart-super-talented-super-powerful-despite-being-untrained, well that just stretches it a bit too much. This aspect of the story ended up bothering me so so much. This teacher explains that her power is greater than anyone he has ever known, and it’s just astonishing that she can do some telepathic tricks that nobody else has ever managed to do, and wow, it’s all pretty much natural to her. But then she gets whisked away to a special school for elves, and they have to get her a special teacher for her telepathy skills. When she thought she was a human, okay, this sort of made sense, because of the telepathy. Sophie is just way too much of the super special awesome unicorn, this prodigious talent who far surpasses the skills of not just those of her own age but also those much much older than her. I’m still interested enough to casually continue the series. And I guess my rating on this isn’t too far off from what she gave the first one (3.75), but I just didn’t think this book was anything too special…yet. Most of the time Regan and I have similar reading interests, so I finally caved and picked up the first book. I had been listening to Regan from PeruseProject on BookTube rave about this series since she started reading them in December 2018. What is her true identity, and why was she hidden among humans?
